Reflections on Social Structure and Individual Life

The Double Standards of Social Systems

In general society, if you live humbly, kindly, and diligently, you can usually get by without major problems – this is a universal value. However, in positions of power, regardless of such virtues, making unwise decisions leads to severe consequences. No matter how prestigious one’s educational background, foolish decisions result in downfall.

This makes us reflect on the weight of power and responsibility. The higher one’s position, the greater wisdom is required, and the consequences of those decisions affect not only the individual but society as a whole.

The Impact of Policy on Individuals

Let’s take real estate policy as an example. Policymakers might think, “If we lower housing prices, it will help ordinary people.” But reality is different. Working-class people who have already secured homes end up suffering losses, while the truly wealthy continue to live in luxury properties.

I myself have been paying interest to the bank for nearly 20 years on a home I worked hard to obtain. During this time, inconsistent real estate policies have left me unable to move anywhere. Through this experience, I’ve learned that there’s often a significant gap between policy intentions and actual outcomes.

The Need for Regional Differentiation

Policies must be detailed and nuanced. For instance, if housing prices rise in a specific area (like Gwanggyo), targeted policies should be applied only to that region. But when broad, uniform policies are applied to entire areas (like all of Suwon), even unrelated people suffer.

This suggests that policy-making requires careful attention to local voices and regional characteristics, demanding a meticulous approach.

The Dangers of Arrogance

The moment policymakers believe their judgment is perfect, arrogance begins. Being competent and being arrogant are completely different dimensions. True capable people maintain humility, always face reality, and are prepared to make corrections.

Even small mistakes in economic policy can have tremendous ripple effects on people’s livelihoods. When things like mortgage rates or cryptocurrency policies are mishandled, the entire society can fall into chaos.

Lessons from Personal Experience

My own past has been filled with hardships, and I continue to live intensely. Through these experiences, I’ve realized that true policy should encourage and support people who work hard.

In the past, I thought any policy that helped ordinary people was good policy, regardless of political orientation. But now I understand that policies that torment even those who work hard earnestly will not be welcomed by anyone.

Conclusion: The Importance of Humility

People in power often smile easily and show confidence. But the moment that smile turns into arrogance, they lose sight of reality. And when they finally come to their senses, it’s often too late.

True wisdom begins with maintaining a willingness to learn and acknowledging that one’s judgment can be wrong. This humility is what will drive progress for both individuals and society.
